A good debut book about sports romance with two team mates on a formula one team. I liked the representation of a woman in the sport especially since McLaren sign Bianca Bustamante as the first female into their driver development program! They are team mates so there is a mix of workplace and forbidden romance. I also enjoyed the book taking place during the 2024 season and highlighted some races throughout the story. The book is a mixed of character and plot driven but more character driven with Blake and Ryder growing stronger as individuals and a couple. I would recommend to romance readers who enjoy sports romance especially set in formula one.

Lights Out is currently a standalone but will be the first book in a 4 book interconnected standalone series.

Wow!
I didn’t really know anything coming into this book. I just thought, okay, romance, but with fast cars 😅
But Kayla James! Miss ma’am… your debut novel??

So we first meet Ryder, a talented F1 driver with a past filled with pain and loss. He’s trying his best to secure his place back into his sport after time off recovering from an injury. Ryder is plagued by memories of his family and the burden of living up to his father’s legacy.

Blake is an up and coming F1 driver trying to find her place in a sport dominated by men. She’s used to fighting against the prejudices and the sexism surrounding her, but her insecurities try to make her second guess her abilities.

I loved seeing Blake and Ryder’s growth both together and independently. They loved each other fiercely and they were a solid team. I love seeing it!

There’s a lot going on in the book! I didn’t know that I was going to be crying like a baby during this, so fair warning!

"King" thing was weird and the "we do this together" didn't eat like you thought it did

Thank you to Kayla and Lovenotes for this arc in exchange for an honest review!!

First off, let me just say that is such a good debut novel! For this being the authors first book, I’m definitely impressed!

I really enjoyed Blake and Ryders story. I honestly flew right through this book and it was such an easy read for me. F1 is a sport I’m lowkey obsessed with, so when I saw the arc sign ups for this book, I knew I had to hop on it and it did not disappoint!

I really enjoyed how f1 was portrayed in this book and it really felt like the author did her research and knew exactly what she was talking about.

As for the characters: I adored Blake and Ryder. Their playfulness and tender hearts towards each other were so precious. I loved seeing how they helped each other get over their fears and be the best versions of themselves on and off the track. I also loved the side characters. They were funny and sweet and I can’t wait to read more about them!

I think the only thing keeping this from being a 5 star read for me was the pacing. I know it spans over the season so it’s going to be somewhat rushed, but some of pacing was a little fast for me. The pacing being so fast in some parts did make it harder for the romance to develop, but other than that, I really enjoyed this story and am so excited to see what else comes from this author!!

It was terrible
Very badly written, can't believe this was edited at all.
It's marketed as 'empowered woman' because she is a female racer but the FMC is actually a clumsy, small, wattpad pick me.
She' not like other girls! She can fix him!
Also it was wrong in so many aspects with the F1 stuff. There is no way a rookie gets to the F1 without NO ONE knowing about her.
