I was surprised very pleasantly by how useful this book is. So many self-improvement style books are so waffly - this one is short, very densely packed with key ideas, and has lots of practical exercises.

It does read as quite outdated - it's all about hetero marriage and has some strongly implicit gender norms - the principles are still relatable and likely applicable to any sort of intimate relationship.

This is very hetero focused, but I also think there most principles can cross over. However the book is written in a very binary way, and highlights differences in men and women evolutionarily and psychologically. That said, there are great principles in the book, and I think lots of couples would benefit. As usual, I often ensure that books like this are based on empirical data and multiple studies. This book mostly focuses on one man’s research, but he does cite other sources and corroborating studies, which I appreciate.

There are a lot of exercises that I’d like to do from the book by myself and with my wife, and I think being more cognizant of a few of these principles will help when we are in the midst of hard times.

We typically don’t have much conflict, but this allows for tools to use when there is conflict and how to resolve it, which I love.

Hope putting it into practice is as helpful as reading the book was.

Overall, I quite like the content of this book, but the tone is hard to stomach. It's definitely worth the read - it gives voice and vocabulary to many abstract aspects of relationships as well as practical approaches to unpacking them. However, the author just gives me the "used car salesman" vibe - sounds a bit self absorbed and like he's always trying to sell something. I feel like he basically took a seminar/workshop and made the transcript into a book and the result is a somewhat grating wrapping around an actually quite nice present.

TLDR: author's tone is annoying, but the content is still solid and worth the read.
