Pride and Protest

I knew I was going to love this book from Page 1. This Darcy (Dorsey) is a real estate developer who secretly wants to be a philanthropist instead. He crosses paths with Lizzie (Liza, née Alizé) who is a popular DJ and community organizer. Dorsey has all of the burning, quiet intensity of the OG Darcy and Liza was just as spunky and spectacular. (Her indignant response to Dorsey’s comment about her hair: “It’s called a twist-out and it’s FABULOUS.”) The best part of the story for me, though, was just how cringe the Bennetts were. Nikki Payne does an amazing job of capturing their working class mannerisms and contrasting it to Dorsey’s polished elegance — the family whipping out Ziploc baggies to fill up at the buffet, Mrs. Bennet’s loud, gross comments about poking holes in the condom for Janae (Jane) to catch Bingley, etc. They were just as embarrassing and loud and chaotic and troublesome to this 2020s reader as the OG Bennets would have been to an 1820s reader, and it was an absolute delight to see that.

A fun read, I liked the diverse retelling in the sense that they felt true to the reality of how many families work. I also liked that it was honest in that PoC can still have stereotypes and biases for other PoC, but even though I’m a fun of the spicy parts in a book, this one kind of took me out of the story at times.

I can never turn down a Pride & Prejudice retelling and this one was lit.

Alize Bennett (Liza B) is a radio DJ and activist fighting to save the last Low Income Housing unit in her neighborhood as it is being gentrified. Dorsey Fitzgerald is the interim CEO for the real estate company founded by his adopted father. Liza meets Dorsey outside his company’s groundbreaking party where she’s planning to protest. She mistakes him for one of the wait staff and enlists his help only to discover that he is her sworn enemy and he has thwarted her plan.

This retelling was so fun! Think Pride and Prejudice in a modern setting with a multi-ethnic cast. All your favorite characters are there and the story is very true to the original. I am super impressed by this book and can’t wait to read Sex, Lies, and Sensibility next!

What a delightful retelling of Pride and Prejudice.. Elizabeth Bennet has become Liza, a DJ and activist in DC, fighting against gentrification and unaffordable housing being planned in her neighborhood, trying to push people like her family out. Darcy has become Dorsey, a Filipino adopted into a wealthy family, and the head of the company trying to build the housing Liza is fighting against.
I loved the family dynamics built in this book, and Liza was excellent..such an incredible woman. It was a super fun take on the classic story.
I read this because it was recommended my Ali Hazelwood, one of my favorite authors. I'll take her recommendations for sure!
