I chose this as a book club pick as it has been on my ‘want to read’ list for ages & been recommended to me by many. For the first half however I was rather underwhelmed with it. 60% in though and things really warmed up & it really grew on me. I loved all the characters, the setting & the reality of life during the London blitz for all these ‘keep calm and carry on’ Brits. A lovely read- once it gets going!
An easy read and as a woman in journalism, I felt connected with Emmy - I began my career hoping to reach the rung of hard news straight away and ended up writing for magazines too…Emmy felt like a friend.

This book was a thoroughly delightful story of Emmeline Lake, a young woman living with her best friend Bunty in London during WWII. What starts out as funny book about Emmeline's career misstep turns into a moving tale of the experience of the young women left at home while a whole generation of men goes off to war or serve at home cleaning up a city devastated by frequent bombing raids. Highly recommend!

It's unusual to find a book about WW II that is lighthearted, but AJ Pearce manages to pull it off. While there are Terribly Sad Things that occur, the overall tone is one of courage. I appreciated that the book is clean, no sex scenes and only a couple of minor swear words. One thing that annoyed me is the author's use of random capitalization to emphasize certain words or phrases. It added to the light tone, but annoyed me as a stickler for proper grammar.
