An impulse buy while on layover at the airport, it was a cute if only 'okay' period piece. I love historical fiction set during the two world wars but this one didn't capture me like so many others have.

A heartwarming story about a young lady in WWII London, who just wants to help. The scenes and locations are written in a way that they came to life in my imagination, and the characters are so endearing - even the formidable Mrs Henrietta Bird. (I pictured my first teacher: a large, serious woman who scared my shy 4-year-old self to tears!) I would have liked the story to go on a little longer, and can totally see this being made into a very sweet movie.
The heroine has indeed been a perfect fool who runs her emotions first before her brain. Yes, it can be annoying at times (most of the time), but sometimes, especially during a war, it may just be what people need. In conclusion, this book is not bad. It is entertaining at times, cheesy and childish, yet most notably realistic in all vital plot points.
I am a sucker for anything set in London during the Blitz. I just cannot imagine--literally have trouble getting my mind to picture--a time when everyone huddled in bomb shelters at night, whole buildlings and blocks were wiped out, and then everyone got up and went to work as if it were a normal day.
This one is a predictable story, but it doesn't matter. As soon as the chapters start, you can probably map out the rest of the novel. But it doesn't matter one whit because the characters and story are so enjoyable.

A pleasantly quick read that made me smile at times and tear up at others.
