A great second installment that takes the story from book 1 into interesting places and rounds out the cast in a great way. El’s character development and the turn of the premise on itself is what great sequels should aspire toward, and I was cheering at how some of the climax played out.

The narration was great, especially at divvying out the various lilts and accents.

This book would be higher rated than it already is if not for Novik’s prose and insistence on piling on the worldbuilding even when it takes the momentum out of a scene. It’s just really wordy.

This sequel was soooooooo good! I loved being back at Scholomance and with El and her friends. I love reading from El's perspective, she is still incredibly sassy and aloof, but the reader can feel her not only growing up as a human, but also in power. I loved the fact that we can FINALLY SEE SOME AWESOME MAGIC HAPPENING! LIKE COME ON!!!
El is amazing and loved to see what she could do. Orion still an adorable bundle of joy and loved him so much, I literally wanted to protect him the whole time, and his pouting about wanting to kill malia was incredibly adorable.
The plot dragged here and there when the politics of Scholomance, however there was a logical sense to it in the end even if if I felt it messed up a bit with the pacing.

Prepare for an onslaught of books that I mark as read (did a lot of procrasti-reading this week) :-/

Enjoyed this follow-up to A Deadly Education more than the original!! Not a huge fan of Novik's writing style - it is pretentious, overly familiar, and lacks in context - but the Scholomance books have got a certain charm to them nonetheless.
