I really enjoyed this graphic memoir. I agree that it is great for fans of Raina Telgemeier as Christina Soontornvat keeps everything real and emotional In her storytelling. It's engaging, relatable, and a real page turner. The lessons Christina and her friends learn from the experience is one I wish I had been able to see as a kid growing up, at least in a more prominent way. I think any middle schooler with a dream would enjoy this.

My nearly eight year old granddaughters could not put this down. It was challenging to start, so I read the first 20 pages aloud. The empathy lessons were wonderful.
The educator in our family told me that graphic novels are an acceptable bridge between picture books and text-only chapter books.
NYTimes book review had lots of praise. Hoping there will be a sequel.

All I have to say is that The Tryout is a really good book, and I recommend reading it. Maybe you’ll see yourself or someone you know in The Tryout.
I borrowed this book for my daughter but my curiosity caused me to read it myself. We are entering the stage where my daughter wants to do poms and I am allowing her to explore this interest (but secretly hope it does not lead to intense cheerleading where I will be at early morning meets. lol) This is a very sweet memoir of a young girl that does not quite fit in at her school because of her ethnicity and interests. She decides to try out for the cheer squad with one of her best friends hoping to fit in more with her popular peers.

I do not want to give a rating for this as I am not the market, which is middle grade students.
I would have loved this in 4th-6th grade. It is a story with clear themes and would bring a lot of students joy, confidence, and hope. The author reflects on her own experience in middle school of being an Asian-American facing racism, searching for her identity, and trying out for the cheerleading squad with her best friend.
I would recommend this to any students of this age bracket, as it provided a great message.
