Lovely, upbeat coming-of-age memoir(?) about friendship, fitting in, standing out, and of course cheerleading. I love that this isn't a 'mean girl' story (there are some nasty—and racist—kids, but it isn't the point of the story), which is otherwise so common with cheerleading books—instead, though here the cheerleaders are sort of aspirational, and not fleshed out, they're presented as benign creatures who just want Christina and the others to succeed. Altogether very satisfying.

young reader gn

a story of an asian american girl who anticipates trying out for her middle school cheerleading team. but it’s also so much more than that; it’s a dialogue about culture, identity, friendship, and what it means to be a kid in america. the author was already on my tbr list when i read this, and i can see why she’s a two-time newbery honoree. her story is incredible, even if it’s so vividly awkward!

I liked this one lots. A great new middle grade graphic novel about trying new things, standing up for yourself, and learning to love who you are and what makes you you.
