This book should be read by all middle schoolers as I know they will relate to the characters and their situations. The bold colors make the graphics pop and Cacao did an awesome job of showing the emotional highs and lows to match the narrative. I also like how Cacao uses different colors for the thought bubbles to represent inner voice and outer voice.
Another fun middle grade graphic novel about friendships, acceptance, and growing up. I really love the character Christina. She loves her parents, struggles to put herself out there without her bestie, and eventually grows to stand up to the casual racism at her school. I like that the author takes the time to explore Christina's character as a Thai daughter and a lover of stories. And Megan is a great BFF, as the only other person of color she meets in her new Texas town.
What's really fun about this book is seeing Christina grow from a meek girl that is afraid of how fast her bestie is growing in her sports and friendships to a girl that can exist and find her own fun interests and friends while still holding onto the one person that understands her the best. And the art is fun too. The characters are fleshed out, even the few sides we have.

Really cute. Really real. You can do nothing wrong and still not succeed, and Christina's resiliency shines in this story.
"So many adults forget how much courage it takes to just be a kid."
Ugh. Preach Christina

This is a perfect addition to our summer reading list with the theme of community!
Great story all around. This will be a popular book when the students get their hands on it.

This graphic novel covers some of the real events and issues the author went through in middle school. At times I cackled, and at others I was infuriated. It tackles issues such as middle school, friendships, racism, and xenophobia.
Moderate: Bullying, Racism, Xenophobia
Minor: Child abuse
