Christina and her best friend Megan are best friends in the seventh grade. They decide to try-out for the cheerleading squad together, which is the sure and certain route to popularity. But will they survive the try-outs with the entire school watching them? More importantly, will their friendship survive?
This is a graphic novel aimed at the middle-school crowd. Christina is from Thailand and Megan is from Iran; the author also tackles bullying but doesn't get too deep into that. There is some exploration of the author's Thai heritage, with some simple explanations of Buddhist prayers and some of the food. I enjoyed reading this book and read it in its entirety in one evening. I am giving it four stars.

I am a forever fan of Christina Soontornvat. She is an incredible writer. Her story is one that many kids will resonate with, bullying, not making the team, and navigating friendships in middle school. I resonate with it too because I am POC who grew up in a small town and had similar experiences.

I enjoy when middle-grade books are not afraid to touch on difficult topics in a way that young people can understand and identify with. People and their experiences are more complex than we can imagine, especially when you are a teenager barely able to cope with your own emotions.
I think books like this one are also important to help us remember how it felt to go through puberty, and how what we see as 'simple' or 'unimportant' events are actually very big problems when you are that age.
