I was initially interested in the late-90s/early aughts coming-of-age-in-London vibes but really appreciated the nods to further histories. This is part memoir, part introspection on what does the LGBTQ+ community look like "after" liberation? Where pride flags hang in every franchised pub year-round.

A good history of the gay bar through one couple’s experiences in the UK and California. Some good insights and history but also quite graphic descriptions of the sex had at or found from these gay bars.
Was not what I expected, lots of anecdotes about the author’s personal life that take up a lot of time and don’t always relate to the prior content

well this was a bit of disappointment! i was hoping for a comprehensive history of gay bars around the world and their roles in the gay liberation movement, but instead it mostly felt like an incredibly repetitive and pretentious memoir. i do think lin is a talented writer and i did genuinely enjoy the sections of history and social commentary, but sadly they were few and far between.
