Agree with the other reviews here. The first 2/3 is delightful but once Henry catches him, it runs out of steam. I was amazed at how well she wrote the mind of a kid.

on one hand: this was a long, well-researched, and complex novel that asked a lot from my little pea brain. on the other hand: it was so easy to sink into that i sometimes didn't realize how much of the story had passed, so.

The pretender (John, Simnel, Edward) is a sympathetic and intriguing character. His quest to discover / construct a true and respectable self was the highlight of this book for me, as well as the tender and sometimes challenging relationships he has with women along the way. But the narrative is so bogged down with historical name dropping and events happening off the page (and just sloppily summarized on the page) that this 475 book was quite a slog. The writing is humorous and even crass/raunchy at times, and Harkin employs syntax and vocabulary of the time period, which was a fun linguistic puzzle.

I thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue in this book, I laughed out loud several times.  I couldn’t follow the story or characters at all.  I tried reading the physical book, listening to audio, and also simultaneously listening to audio and reading.  I just couldn’t understand what was happening beyond chapter 10.  But that said, I think this is a great book but that I am not smart enough or I am too ADHD to follow it completely.  I can tell it’s a good book but maybe it’s just beyond me.
