10 stars if I could. This book shattered my heart into peices the size of grains of sand omg I don’t know if I’ll recover. I need to emotionally process this book for a few days
This is my first book by Jennifer Niven and having picked it up on a whim, I'm so pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It's filled with raw, messy character figuring out life and all the hardships, changes and challenges that come with it. It's about grief and first love and family and heartbreak.
I instantly warmed to the cast of imperfect but loveable characters and the multiple complex and individual relationships between them. The plot was endearing, heartfelt, honest and the setting was wonderfully immersive and added everything I'd hoped it would to this remote island/small town story. The discussions surrounding sex and virginity was overall pretty great in its feminist message and clearly tried to be inclusive towards non-hetero relationships which, for the most part it was. However, there was unfortunately quite a few moments of, (I'm sure unintentional but never the less present) asexual erasure but honestly? I think that was my only qualm with this book.
Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable, warm, honest and easy read and one I'm so glad I decided to pick up. (Also the audiobook narration is fab.)

I genuinely L O V E D this book. It spoke on many topics that I resonate with so much and topics/ feelings that I just don’t see a lot in books or YA books. It was genuine. It was real and it was truthful. Definitely feel like this was good for 16/17+ because emotions are all over the place at this age and this book might help late teens understand more things in all kinds of relationships.
Some topics being, emotions after intimacy, being a child of divorce, friendships fights and when best friends get into relationships.
Personally I didn’t really like Claude at times, but that is what makes a character more rounded and more interesting. I still related in some ways or maybe saw some of my younger self in her when I was going through high school. All the supporting characters and main character were flawed but in realistic ways, it was believable and a true representation of a young persons life around high school and college.
Jeremiah Crew in all his glory was care free, cheeky and clueless. If only they didn’t refer to his bare feet every chapter… kinda gave me the ick. Lowkey I felt weird that they barely referred to each other by their names although “captain” was a cute nickname.
This book holds a special place in my heart. Absolutely loved it and recommend to anyone who feels like reading something real and honest.

Both All the Bright Places and Holding Up the Universe has a special place in my heart. In a way, these two novels actually saved me from a dark time in my life. So I am pretty excited to get to finally read this third novel of Jennifer Niven, who become such an inspiration to me for the past couple of year already.
The novel revolves around eighteen-year-old Claude Henry and her current life dilemma— her parents divorcing, her life-long friendships and the changes it is going through, and her virginity and love life. It kind of pains me to rate this novel just three stars only because the narrative is good, the setting is exceptional, and the characters are diverse in their way. But there is something I couldn't figure out myself about the main character herself. I find her pretty much dull and that's about it about her. Maybe I'm just so used to her previous women characters that are so strong-willed and has good opinions that Claude Henry's character disappoint me to the core.
It is still a good read though, despite the main characters' flaws and insecurities, the novel still provides a great narrative of how life can always disappoint us in the most damning ways. It is real, it is unique. It is life written.
