Alice Munro is a great writer, there is no doubt about that, but this collection of short stories was not for me. I did enjoy the first story very much, and the movie that was made also based on this first short story was well done, though it was set in more current times. I struggled to make my way through most of the stories, but felt I needed to finish, just in case there was another story like the first one. Sadly, there was not, not for me anyway. I have another book of hers on my shelf, and plan to read that at some point when the fog from reading this collection leaves me. Ha!

Exquisite, beautiful little masterpieces. Each and every story is a gorgeous example of short story mastery. I am left in awe.

A really dazzling collection. I am so happy to finally have read Munro’s writing. All of her short stories in this collection are so delicately and precisely written that I didn’t mind the slow pacing. A meticulous eye for detail and a precision that fills every story on domestic life, Munro recapitulates some of the deepest human emotions in these nine short stories. My favorite ones include “Comfort,” “Nettles,” and “The Bear Came Over the Mountain,” the last of which should be studied by anyone wanting to write a good short story.
