I've really enjoyed the other books I've read by Christine Day and this was no exception. This was a really great middle grade following an indigenous tween girl. Pretty much the entirety of the book is set during one day and we follow Wesley going through different struggles. I really enjoyed the family dynamic that was at play, it's not a "traditional" family set up because her father is not in the picture for very clear reasons which I thought was nice to see in a middle grade. A lot of kids nowadays don't have the traditional family set up, so it's nice that they can see that represented here. It was also really endearing that her crush was reciprocated and that he was there to support her in her big moment. I also really liked the inclusion of connecting with some of the girls that she didn't expect to. One of the so called "popular" girls who she comforted and became friends with as well as the new girl to school who she finds out is also indigenous and they connect over this at the local powwow. Overall, I really enjoyed this and I highly recommend all of this author's books. I think anyone of any age can take something from her books.

”It was a simple thing. Some of the best things in life are small and simple, aren’t they?”

The premise was good but the plot was meh. It is an easy read for sure. The following story about a teenager named Wesley who is so proud of her heritage and her crush on Ryan.

I expected more heartwarming and develoing story. But this book is too—mediocre. Well, apart from the premise about the indigenous culture.

I liked the premise but didn't enjoy the writing style. It was too much talking at the reader rather than letting the story be told.
