It is Indigenous People's Day and Wesley has written a poem that is published in the school paper in honor of the day. It is also a big day for her because she plans to ask her crush to a girl's choice dance. Nothing goes as she expects but by the end of the day she has new friends, plus deeper appreciation of her family and culture.

Cute story of a day in the life of an Indigenous girl. Nothing goes according to plan. Great representation of middle school life and it was cool to learn some things about indigenous people. Definitely a highlight for Native stories.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of WE STILL BELONG by Christine Day.

Wesley lives with her mom, grandfather, uncle, aunt and baby cousin. She is in 7th grade and has recently tried to join the indigenous students' group at her school but was disappointed to find out there weren't enough students interested in attending. Her first piece of poetry was published in the school newspaper for Indigenous People's Day. She is hurt when a teacher, who always reads a student's published work, does not read hers. Her friend, Hanan, encourages her and states that Wesley did have a strong thesis.
There are times that Hanan's dialogue seemed a little bit too old for a twelve-year-old, but overall, I really enjoyed this middle grade novel.

A sweet middle-grade novel about a young woman finding solace in her family, her heritage, and her own unique voice, after a particularly rough day.

This was a cute middle grade book! Kind of hard to remember it all took place in one day, since so much happened and there were so many story lines going on, but the overall message and premise of this book is really good and I love the representation.

I received a free eARC of this book. Thank you for the opportunity to read it

We Still Belong is a story of Wesley, a girl with native roots, who is trying to find her place in a world which seems to want to ignore that she exists and relegate her family to history. This is a positive book that gives indigenous kids representation they need…and gives everyone awareness of their classmates and friends. It deserves a place in school and classroom libraries.

Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read this eARC!

This was a beautiful, heartfelt story about a teenager and her daily life. From making new friends, asking out her crush, navigating her indigenous heritage and family. It's such a sweet story of being brave and being true to yourself with some really good messages for teens and preteens of today.
