Read this during my 2 months living in New York. My exploration of a 2023 New York paralleled Towles’ exploration of a 1930s New York. I loved the protagonist so much, and I haven’t rooted for a character like this in a long time. The displacement that came with feeling like Eve was the textbook main character and Katey the sidekick made me root for Katey all the more. The twist at the end was great too.

This took me a bit to get into but I really enjoyed it overall. Sometimes the main character was a little much for me - the way she said things made me roll my eyes a few times - but she was still likeable. I enjoyed all the characters and really digging deep to learn more about them.

What am I missing here? Towles’ prose is nearly perfect, as always, but the story didn’t grab me. I kept waiting for it to pull itself together and it never did.
I loved this. I just really love a book about girls in their 20s in NYC, no matter the time period. The story is glamorous and messy in a way that still sparkles. Katey is so fierce, but her power is admirably quiet. I feel for Tinker, though. Guilt is a powerful motivator, and so is passion.
