I really enjoyed this book. It's like a combination of "Age of Innocence" meets "Great Expectations" meets "The Great Gatsby".

After finishing Rules of Civility by Amor Towles I’m let a bit underwhelmed. I’m wondering if when listening I zoned out at key moments that resulted in me missing the nuance and beauty of this book. I found the characters wonderful and quite vivid, but I never quite grasped what I was supposed to be taking away from the story. Often times I wanted more depth and detail than I got. I was reading this alongside Astor by Anderson Cooper & Katherine Howe which I do think impacted my perception of the story somewhat. While this set well past the Gilded age, I still was waiting for more of the glitz and glamour of New York that I thought a good majority of the characters were a part of. I’m certainly not upset having read the book, but it did not live up to my expectations after having loved A Gentleman in Moscow. I’ve got The Lincoln Highway on my shelf already so will give that a go at some point.

In the end this got 3 stars from me and did not become the Amor Towles book I’d recommend folks read to try him as an author.

Really good. A somewhat sad but thought-provoking book. I think I would have appreciated it even more, if I hadn't been traveling while I read it.

adorei até meio. depois começou a parecer o argumento duma má comédia romântica meets aqueles livros do harlequin

Wow. This book came to me at the perfect moment. It exactly captures the sentimental nostalgia of Auld Lang Syne— how fitting that the story opens and closes on NYE, the same holiday I found myself reading this. All week l've been ripe with wistful looks back at my year, taking an account of who I was with and how we
spent our days. "Rules of Civility" is all that, wrapped in the most gorgeous writing. AND I recently returned home from a romantic visit to NYC— the city is a glitzy main character here!

Katey Kontent is such a compelling character
