Rules of Civility transported me back to 1938 New York, making me feel nostalgic for a time and place that I’ve never been. Towles has a beautifully articulate way of writing that I really enjoyed. My favorite being “I know that right choices by definition are the means by which life crystallizes loss”
However, I don’t think this book is without flaws, I felt like the characters lacked depth and that their reactions to situations often fell flat. While I commend the characters for taking hardships and disappointments in stride, I don’t think it worked with the “naked humanity” concept that the author was striving for.

I only like historical fiction if it’s Amor Towles! Made me romanticize NYC and want to join a 1920s social club lolll. What happened to Tinker at the end seemed a little trite but I liked stepping back in time through this book. Liked Katey’s growth as a character and thought she was an insightful narrator.

What a wonderful, immersive story. Maybe it’s because I listed to it or just a fondness for old timey New York but this was such a fun book to read and I’d recommend to most people. The story follows Katie, a 20 something women living in New York City in the 1930s. It explores friendship, love, careers, affairs, art, friendship, and fun in the city. I loved the strong female protagonist who makes her way in a world not quite meant for her. I’m sure I’ll read this again in a few years. I loved the characters, their flaws, and how you were always rooting for someone.

My favorite read of 2021 thus far, I found this hard to put down.

Not a perfect book, but I love it

Intrigued by the beginning, somewhat satisfied by the end, bored in the middle.

the book is a wannabe that wishes it could be like hemingway, tolstoy and a bit of Fitzgerald. Newsflash: it doesn’t even come close.

The people in this book would be my worst nightmare for company. A lot of words that say a whole lot of nothing.

This book has been sitting on my shelf for YEARS and I finally got around to reading it this month. With descriptive writing and imagery, I was instantly transported to 1930s NYC. The story itself was sort of "no plot, just vibes" which is exactly the kind of story I enjoy.

Delicious prose, would highly recommend if you like a NYC setting.
