”When the war is over, got to get away
Pack my bags to no place, in no time, no day
You and I we used each other's shoulder
Still so young but somehow so much older
How can I go home and not get blown away
[…]
When the war is over, got to start again
Try to hold a trace of what it was back then
You and I we sent each other stories
Just a page I'm lost in all its glories
How can I go home and not get blown away”

- Steve Prestwich

"Well, here at last, dear friends, on the shores of the Sea comes the end of our fellowship in Middle-earth. Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil."
- Gandalf

I read these while I was studying abroad in Barcelona, Spain, so mixing the experience of these adventures with my real life adventure of living in a foreign country was engulfing (in one of those good ways where it becomes all-consuming). I was literally obsessed with these books then...I've tried rereading them and it just isn't the same.

I admire Tolkien deeply. The man single-handedly created an entire genre of literature. He was able to write down on paper descriptions that are so rich that simply saying Lothlorien Woods or Gandalf sends you an instant image.

But I think that's the problem: we all imagine the same exact thing because he so meticulously described every aspect of that thing to us. He's just so wordy! I can hear the influence of Victorian prose. Those people wrote as though they were paid by the word, and many of them were. I don't need an author to lie to me completely, just convincingly. Sketch in the background, give me some texture, and I'll do the rest.

I've read The Lord of the Rings only twice cover to cover. It's massive. It's world is massive. And I find that it is sometimes difficult to get from beginning to end. The pace of some bits is so fast that, if I'm not paying attention, I have to turn back a page or two and try again. Alternately, some bits are so slow that I find myself wanting to skip entire paragraphs to press forward.

Lord of the Rings has been a HUGE influence on my life and my imagination ever since I read it in 9th grade.

You're just a hard Hobbit to break ! : )

My earliest influence: The man who ignited the love of words in me. He will always be the dearest figure in English literature to me.

I read this for a class in college and it was really fun to have discussions about it all the time. Sometimes boring but a lot of the time it was interesting and magical. There are lessons in here that are really essential. About power, greed, faith, and bravery.
