Oh wow. Took a year, but I finally finished re-reading all three books.
For years, I've been living a lie that I thought the films adapted the books very well. Not entirely so. By reading these books at a time when the films are not in cinemas and I'm older to grasp some of the things I didn't understand, I can now say: "I understand why some Tolkien fans have issues with the films".
The dialogue, at times, is lifted directly from the book. As are the visuals when it comes to scenery, landscape, the Tolkien 'feel'. The plot and key moments have been taken advantage of and twisted to fit the film.
But I'm talking about the book, yes? The book was a fantastic read. It's THE fantasy series of the 20th century. It's so rich with so many lands, names, characters (also mentioned in passing) that I honestly couldn't wait to pick up the other Lord of the Rings stories.
If there is one thing that I seemed to not enjoy, and I'll probably get flagged for it: The Scouring of the Shire. I thought out of every chapter in the book, I didn't care for that chapter. Maybe it was the way it was written? Or maybe I didn't care about the hobbits? I just felt really exhausted with that chapter and I couldn't wait for Frodo to peace out to the grey havens.
But yes, this was a fun re-read. :)
