Still one of the best epic pieces of literature ever written. Weaving through stories of climate change, animal rights, women's rights and even some hints of gay relationships. I wonder what Tolkien would write were he alive in 2017.

A great book. Didn't love most of the songs/poetry but the king's speech just before the Rohirrim charged was fantastic. I think this book benefits from being read aloud, because you just really need to soak in the language: it's luxurious. I've seen the movies before and have many friends who'd read the books, so the plot didn't surprise me, but I still enjoyed every page because of the language.

2018-

Indeed in nothing is the power of the Dark Lord more clearly shown than in the estrangement that divides all those who still oppose him.
 -Haldir, elf of Lorien

Where now is the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain like a wind in the meadow,
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.
Who shall gather the smoke of the dead wood burning,
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?
 -Aragorn

2024 Read again.  How many times have I read this trilogy?  Soon after the 2024 election I read it again, to help me move out of despair.  Again see so many things differently than in previous readings.
This time I didn't try to remember all the history and the past tales that I used to know, I just read and accepted the trilogy is steeped in past history.
2024 quotes:

"The treacherous are ever distrustful" answered Gandalf wearily.

"Many hopes will wither in this bitter spring" (Aragorn)

It feels like I’ve obtained something huge by reading this story all the way through. I’ve wanted to read LOTR since I was in 6th grade after I finished The Hobbit. Of course LOTR is on a different level than The Hobbit. It’s far more detailed and poetic. It was dense at times, but the story that was unfolding as I read was unlike anything I’ve read before. Im just really happy with myself and proud that I got through it.

The story is really excellent but unfortunately I found the writing style to be pretty tiring. Maybe I’ll like reading it more when it’s not for a class
