It feels like I’ve obtained something huge by reading this story all the way through. I’ve wanted to read LOTR since I was in 6th grade after I finished The Hobbit. Of course LOTR is on a different level than The Hobbit. It’s far more detailed and poetic. It was dense at times, but the story that was unfolding as I read was unlike anything I’ve read before. Im just really happy with myself and proud that I got through it.
The story is really excellent but unfortunately I found the writing style to be pretty tiring. Maybe I’ll like reading it more when it’s not for a class

I forgot I was reading this. I had a kid a month later...I guess I just got busy.
After many years, still my favourite epic.
I read this for the first time in Italian when I was about 14. Through the years I have picked it up several times again, both in Italian and English to read different passages, but never the whole book again.
Now, over thirty years after the first time, I’ve read the whole thing again, this time in English (which made appreciate a writing richness that was missing from the translation).
Still a masterpiece, still my favourite epic ever. A life changing book.

It's been ten years since I read Lord of the Rings all the way through and I enjoyed it just as much this time around as I did then. Some things have that staying power. This is one.

I will never grow tired of rereading Lord of the Rings. The perilous journey, the endurance against evil, the bonds between friends created and broken and forged anew. Good versus evil. Man versus man. Internal struggles. Love endured. Literally every thing you could possibly want in a story.
In spite of the 1000+ pages, you still don’t want to leave these characters when the story ends.

Maybe if I re-read this as an adult of my own volition, my rating would he higher... However, 20 years later, all I have are excruciating memories of being forced to read this for school - I simply hated this book then (a bit more than I disliked the more recent movies). Perhaps this is because I just didn't do fantasy - there's enough I didn't/don't know about the world as it actually is for me to have any time getting lost in la-la-lands of untethered imagination (though I do enjoy a foray once in a while, i.e. the Narnia Chronicles are my favorite books from childhood - though these are about human children, albeit travelers to Narnia but still not completely untethered from reality).
Considering how many people I respect love this series, I have no doubt it's great, hence the two-star rating (my personal enjoyment of it was something like a negative 10). Pertinent lesson for English teachers? ... Beware of turning kids off from a genre for life by coercing books they don't want to read down their throats?
