A very fun jam packed short story that has you question whether her mum really is a “witch”, an overprotective/ caring maternal mother or just an unwell woman? For me personally, I interpreted this story as a mentally ill mother (possibly schizophrenic) who was labelled as “crazy” instead of getting the help she needed to bring her back to reality to be a good mother to her child and later declines into depression after her ex husband dies. As her mum says “invent?” implying that these stories have been real to her and the delusions part of her daily truth.
I don’t see many reviews discussing this and maybe I have interpreted it wrong but if I’m right then this is a very unique way of highlighting how in the 1950s mental health wasn’t discussed and disorders weren’t understood and I’d like to think now that if someone was discussing having a 400 year battle with Mrs Scace they’d get some help! The only negative I have is that it feels that we could have benefitted from some of the background of her mums life to give context, like has she always had delusions? What was her childhood like? Etc
Overall a great short read to bring so much emotion and realness to the younger daughter!

This was a good short story but based on the excellent reviews I expected a little bit more. I can't even really put my finger on why I didn't love this. It's super easy reading and overall pretty interesting, but I honestly didn't love the ending. Unpopular opinion, i know. 🤷♀️
