The characters and world were established in the previous novel, so most of the beginning was establishing Zahara and Massimo's POVs. Rewatching chunks of flashbacks that we knew parts of. I have read a fair share of taboo tropes, but the execution of this step bro dark mafia romance just didn't sit right at times. I felt as if the author themself was unsure whether it was okay or not either. This felt like a draft that needed more work. Massimo felt like caricatures of mental illness and mafia men roled into one. He needed someone beside Zahara and Solva. Supporting characters with consistent relationships and interactions with. Most of the time that would be siblings, parents, or friends, but the author killed them off or twisted them. Massimo could honestly have benefited from on screen therapy, Zahara did not need to be having sex with him in front of the entire mafia counsel. Establish dominance like normal people. The book overall had poorly written side characters and when the smut was introduced it then became the main focus instead of the rich plot that Neva was attempting to establish.
We never know the fate of Peppe and that makes me sad. He was one of the only side characters that was consistent and became a throw away death.
A lot happened in the last 20 pages and we got no time with Massimo and Zahara to sit with their peace and HEA. It just ended, and we get no reunion or happy ruling couple besides them ducking at counsel meetings and tieing into the next couple's book. Disappointed, really wanted to enjoy this.

Zaharah’s character was so well written. Massimo definitely got a bit annoying at times and I didn’t know if the vibe of this book was really for me at first, but after a while I was eating it up. My biggest gripe is and will continue to be the chapter lengths, no reason for them to be SO LONG ugh.

1.9🌶

I am a huge fan of this author and I love how she typically writes her characters- they’re very human and feel realistic. This book didn’t feel that way. Many of the characters felt like caricatures instead of people, especially the main male character. There were quite a few things including character choices that I just don’t buy and aren’t consistent with the characters.
