I enjoyed the short story but the pauses in the audiobook drove me nuts. The reader did a great job.
The intro feels like the Fallout video games but does distinguish itself. Of course in a couple of years, when my memory has faded, the two will likely become interchangeable.

The silo is without a sheriff now that a cleaning has been performed.

Mayor Jahns and Deputy Mames have found a suitable replacement but they need to recruit her in person, and that means they need to go Deep Down.

Along their journey, they share secrets with each other, and discover alliances that are broken enough to destroy the silo they have worked hard to protect. On top of that, their candidate for sheriff might not be as perfect as she is on paper.

DID NOT FINISH: 85%

Okay I read the first novella and most of the second but honestly, I think I'm done with this omnibus. I really enjoyed the first part about the sheriff but maybe it should of stayed a novella? This second novella just didn't do it for me.

OK, new characters. The world seems like it's got a lot in store, so I'll push on.

I can't believe it ended like that. Stupid cliffhangers.

Now we get a glimpse into the politics of the dreadful silo of Wool - usually a boring part of any series, but it was handled quite well in this one. And we get the clearer idea of the "bad guys" in the story. And we get the better idea of the scope of this world, the hugeness of the silo.

The writing remains good in this installment. I did miss the completeness and the haunted feeling of the first novella. However, this is inevitable since, unlike the first one, this one was not originally intended to be a standalone piece. Wool 2 is a different read since it sets the stage for the conflict of the expanded story, and this part has the tedious (but still very enjoyable in this case) task of setting up the larger picture and introducing the characters.

I think Wool could have easily remained a wonderful standalone novelette, but on the other hand I am grateful to be able to see more of this world, and will be immediately moving on to Wool 3. Good story with much potential. Can't wait to see where it goes.

Part 2 was just as good as part 1. I love this author, because so far he has been able to build worlds and characters efficiently and effectively.
I've been wondering why some authors are so good at that, and others take whole series and hundreds (or thousands) of pages and don't have much to show for it in terms of depth. All I can come up with is that for the successful, the people and places are real. They are fully formed in the author's mind already, so when the details are presented to the reader we also get a sense of completeness. We know there is more there, and likely more to be revealed, without a lot of extra effort.

I found every single page of part 2 interesting, and am looking forward to part 3.

This one was definitely meant to show off the silo and better set us up for the many installments of Wool ahead. I want to tell you all the things, but I'm not going to spoil it. I'm left with some anticipation. Big things are coming, I can feel it!

Again, the ending was so not what I was expecting! Good book. Can't wait to start #3 :)
