3.5: reading this made me realize I don’t remember a lot that happened in Red Queen! I will have to reread it and continue this series. It was interesting to read from Cal’s moms perspective! So sad that it was so short!

I am married to a prince who will one day be a king. Usually this is where the fairy tale ends. Stories don't go much further than this moment, and I fear there's a good reason for it. A sense of dread hung over today, a black cloud I still can't be rid of. It is an unease deep in the heart of me, feeding off my strenght

I am struggling to rate this book. Because the fact that I dislike what happens to poor Coriane doesn't mean that I think it's not well made, so maybe 3,5 stars.
Coriane is lost. So lost it hurts. She was sort of weak even before going to the castle, and that made it really easy for Elara to destroy her. I cannot possibly love a novella about a depressed girl, and I am glad it was short, because it was giving me a lot of angst.
I need to complain though about Coriane's character again. In RQ it is said that she was different and wanted to change things, but we see nothing of that in these pages. It's all about how she fell for Cal and accepted a role she couldn't possibly stand and Elara manipulated her till her death.
I missed that something I thought she had of a rebel, and it's not here. So that made me like her less, since I saw really nothing to distinguish her from the rest as Julian said.

"Coriane simply could not believe how her mind seemed to spin out of control, happy one second and then distraught the next, bouncing between emotions like a kite in a gale."

Honestly, this book added a lot of value to the series for me. It was a beautiful story told that is intertwined with the feeling of emptiness, loss, and sadness. I really felt for Coriane throughout the entire story. I felt so deeply for her when she finally confronted Elara, and she realized that the feelings she has been having have been hers all along. But, also were they really?

I'm not going to lie, I'm still a bit confused by the ending because I truly don't know if Elara actually convinced Coriane to kill herself. I'm assuming it's up to interpretation (or we may find out in later books), but it is clear in Red Queen that Julian is convinced Elara had something to do with it. I also think that, but I am really on the fence after Coriane used her singer abilities on Elara. I'm hoping that we get clarification on that in one of the later books in the series.

i loved being able to learn coriane’s story, even though it absolutely ripped out my heart and shattered it into a million pieces. she deserved so much better. her love for cal really was so evident. fuck you elara you can choke and die.

i also loved the fact that the king had a male consort. i love the gay.

I feel like I can never rate this series well especially since I feel as if the series wasn’t fun for me to read. I found this novella alright, I liked how it gave a backstory. Since I haven’t read anything on this series in around two years it was rather hard to follow who was who.

This novella gave lots of insight on Elara and Cals mother Coriane. It's interesting but not necessary to read. - March 7 2016
