mmm maybe not for me..
so i should have known that i dont typically love satire. i picked this one up because i was itching for some female rage, but turns out i dont love living in the head of a misanthrope. millie’s bitterness at everything in her life, while understandable and admittedly entertaining, does kind of feel suffocating. my heart did kind of ache at some points as i saw myself in millie’s identity crisis and career impasse but then the book would kind of shatter this with really inappropriate/disproportionately harsh, violent grumblings from the protagonist. and i get it! i get the painful behavioural corset one must put on at work, seething at the thought of a job while desperately searching for one, feeling irate and unhinged under the arbitrary customs in the modern capitalist hellscape.. i get the horribly desultory nature of corporate life that the author is touching on here, its just that the superiority speak (smothered over insecurity) in the protagonists head gets really frustrating. i read another review say that this book made them feel like trash and well, ditto. maybe going into mental health and that insecurity/self-destruction aspect of her crisis might have helped flesh out the character a bit more? otherwise she reads so bitter that i frankly cant tell what’s worse, millie’s delusional self sabotage or the sadistic corporate world. i did like the observations of the often self-serving basis of female relationships here though.. again, i was entertained.

I am very susceptible  to taking in what I consume and this was no different. I felt her hopelessness, grittiness, and hatefulness stick to me a little…. Besides that it was introspective and made you think about your own life and moments when you’ve felt stuck. It was very human.

Still unsure of how I felt about this one - simultaneously depressingly relatable and infuriating, with on-point humour and cynicism. Going to have to give it some more time to see how I really feel, but a 3.5 for now
