Round One of voting for the Goodreads Choice Awards began this week and this book, Without Merit, was on the list for Best Romance. That is not where it belongs. This isn't a romance. I know what you are thinking...it's Colleen Hoover, it has to be romance. Nope. This is a Young Adult fiction with just a teeny tiny side of a love story. So, hopefully round two of the GR Choice Awards will fix that?
Luckily, thanks to a few of my friend's reviews, I went into this book knowing that it wasn't the typical CoHo romance. I am so glad for that! I ended up loving this book in the end. It had a bit of a slow start and I was a little confused as where the book was going, but once the direction became clear, I found myself blown away! Even though I knew this book would be different, I just wasn't expecting it to go where it did.
Somewhere in the first half of the book I found myself thinking this is just too weird! and these people are train wrecks! It was...interesting. ;) I loved the second half of the book. I love that Hoover has the guts to go 'there'. I think it is such an important topic to discuss. (Being vague on purpose so as not to spoil anything.) And even though the ending was a little bit unrealistic, it made me happy.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. This is a unique story that is not really comparable to anything else that I have read. I think this is one of those books that will stay with me for a while.
If you are a very sensitive reader, you may want to look at trigger warnings listed in other reviews, but I would avoid them unless absolutely necessary.

I just don’t think Colleen Hoover is my cup of tea. Her stories start off compelling, and I appreciate her attempt to cover heavy topics such as suicide and depression. I just think she misses the mark. She kind of lost me when she compared taking antidepressants to taking medication for lactose intolerance.
The characters are all a bit crazy but it's a pretty enjoyable, light read. The romance itself isn't memorable, but the rest of the ride is solid.
I enjoyed this one so much! I read it all in one sitting. I loved the story because I know what it's like to have a crazy family, to want a "normal" one but knowing there's really no such thing because every family is crazy in their own way. I related with the main character quite a bit. It was for sure a page turner for me and I just wanted to know how it was going to end. Everything worked out and I liked the ending!

3.5 ⭐️ rounded up! I wouldn’t call this her best book, but it hit the spot for a Coho fix.

- I honestly liked merit and loved her quirky ways. This says a lot because I was expecting a bit less from Collen Hoover. I think this book was good though.
