Definitely helpful to have in graduate school. I hate to admit it but it would have been helpful to have in undergrad to really flesh out my papers in a different way.

I had to read this book for my class on Literary Theory. The book did a good job at presenting each theory in a semi-simple way. I didn't necessarily agree with everything in the book. For example, I didn't always agree with Tyson's applications of the theories to the novel The Great Gatsby. So, overall, I would say the book is helpful. I think, in the end, I didn't really enjoy the topic of Literary Theory, and I struggled a lot with the topic.

Lois Tyson poured her everything in this book. It's the work of a genius mind. I loved reading this book several times. It changed me for the better.

It was required for my courses, but the book became a friend who was urging me to study while having some fun. Compared to all of the other recommended reading (all men), this book was a ray of sunshine.

Knowledge and wisdom along with insight were distilled in the pages of this book. Complex ideas presented with such simplicity made for a terrific read. I'm a bit disappointed that the author, well, authored just this one book, but the glass is completely full.

This was required reading for a college class but I really enjoyed it. All the theories were presented clearly which was great because I have no prior background with lit theories. My only complaint would be that I didn't know a lot of the novels and authors that she used for examples. This problem just makes me want to find those authors to read now! I have a feeling that as I progress into other Lit courses, this book will get pulled out many, many times.

My only qualm is that I wish se went more into detail on certain theories. (It may just be because I find it all fascinating.)

i was assigned this in my last semester in college and while i thought it was really good, it was super unrealistic of me to expect i would continue finish it after graduating.

the parts i read were excellent and inspiring however!!

I was reading this book aspartame of my uni course, I gave read most of the theories except one or two. The theories I enjoyed reading about most was feminism, Marxism and psychoanalysis. Tyson creates a clear but comprehensive guide to a beginners look at the theories, but the book is also helpful for more in depth knowledge as I learnt things I didn't know previously about theories. I also liked The Great Gatsby critical readings as not only could you see how the readings were very different but get an idea of how to put them into practice for yourself.
