DNF-ed @54%. I had high hopes for this book. Disney princesses after "happily ever after" and historical realism mashup? I was like, YES. Yet, it didn't work out for me. Where should I even begin?
For starter, Belle’s character just rubbed me the wrong way. I am not super familiar with the original Beauty and The Beast Tale, but even I know that Belle is one of the smartest, most headstrong and confident Disney princesses. In Rebel Rose however, Belle didn't feel like the same Belle, her arc of overcoming self-doubts (and getting used to being rich, because "being rich is just SO hard") made little sense. All the other side characters were so boring and were there just because they were in the original story or to bring out Belle's (also very boring) personality.
The writing was really straight forward and quite bland. The way the story was told left little space for readers to interpret/discover things for themselves. And truth to be told, the pacing wasn't that great either.

Beauty and the Beast is my all-time favourite Disney movie/fairytale, and Belle is my favourite princess. However, I don't think I really enjoyed this book, as it wasn't a retelling - more of a continuation which didn't really pique my interest. It was still an okay read, but I just didn't love it as much as I love all the retellings I discover.

Title: Rebel Rose
Author: Emma Theriault
Ch: 30 Plus Epilogue
Pg: 345
Series: The Queen’s Council book 1
Genre: Beauty and Beast retelling, Fairytale retelling, sequel
Rating: 4.5 Stars
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
Rebel Rose by Emma Theriault is a book that I didn’t know that I needed. This is the what happens after the Beast and Belles happily ever after at the end of Beauty and the Beast.
What I love about this book is that it also ties on the historical time period of the French Revolution. But by making Belle and the princes kingdom a neighbor of France instead of part of that kingdom.
The Belle in this novel is how I pictured Belle being in her role as the wife of the prince being. Having either a crown or a title wouldn’t change who Belle truly was. Even more that the cartoon and movie the Belle in this book is an even stronger role model for girls.
Belle was and is still my favorite Disney Princess and Rebel Rose makes me love her even more.

Look, I really wanted to like this one but unfortunately I had barely started and already I knew we wouldn't match. I continued anyway, in hopes I was wrong but... I wasn't.
Ok, here is my main problem: this is supposed to be a Beauty & The Beast continuation (based on the Disney movie (cartoon or actual live action, at this point I wouldn't have been difficult, one or the other would have done the trick)). The problem was? Well... For a story to be a continuation, that implies the author has a vague idea of the character's nature and personalities...
Let's put aside the fact the Beast's prince name is Lio for some ridiculous reason (1, he's named Adam in the Disney world, 2, it may sound French but I promise the only thing French people think about when they read Lio is not Lion but an old 80s singer who's known to sing vulgar songs) and focus on Belle.0
Ah, Belle... Brave, headstrong, clever... Except, here... Not so much... Belle, apparently, went through a whole personality change and now is all uncertain of her place in the world. Because Belle is a "peasant" and she doesn't want to be a "princess". And that's in the first few pages, okay, so I was like... Well... Okay... But then it becomes A Thing. And at that moment I couldn't help but think... You married a prince, what did you expect exactly?
Bella was annoying. Lio was annoying. Bastien was annoying. Everyone was annoying. Also in 100 pages, nothing happened.
I tried even to shift my mind and think about this as a continuation of a not Disney B&B which would account for the characters being different but honestly I couldn't care at all about anyone on account of all of them being so annoying. Belle came across as so selfish and naïve...
Also I'm unclear if Aveyon is supposed to be Aveyron which is a French region but nothing really worked for me in this book. I won't even touch the historical side of things because... WELP.
I would go so far as to say I hated everything about this book XD
I saw the author for the Mulan one is a different one so I might give it a go but I'm not really sure how I feel about this series. The concept was great but the execution was poor.
