Mr. Malcolm's List

It's a pretty simple, regency romance of getting back at the arrogant Mr. Malcolm and Miss Dalton catching feels real quick but pushed along in Miss Whistlewaite's schemes. Honestly the last quarter bit was hilarious when everyone is over themselves. Mainly read to watch the movie. :P

I am more conflicted about this book than any book I've ever read. I chose to read it before seeing the movie that's coming out this summer, and I'm glad that I did.

The story itself was entertaining. I'm sure there are other regency romances out there with similar plots, but I've personally never read one like it, and I enjoyed it! Really! But... that's as far as my praise goes.

Reading this through the lens of "I wonder what the movie will be like", I could almost envision exactly how it will play out, because this book looked like it was written to translate into a screenplay. There was little emotional depth, with everything being told instead of showed. Everything about the characters was told, not expressed through their actions—I knew exactly how pretty Selina was, how arrogant Mr. Malcolm was, how annoying Julia was, and how repulsive Cassie was. All of their characters lacked dimension.

The chemistry between the couples was almost nonexistent. Every time they kissed on-page I had to double-check whether or not I'd missed something, because every time it seemed to happen out of the blue. They spent more time complaining about each other's faults than falling in love.

HOWEVER, I think it will be a delightful movie if the actors have any working chemistry at all. There were funny moments in the story that I think will translate well to screen... which is to say that I think this is going to be one of those situations where the movie is better than the book.

PG

A pleasant way to pass the time, but not particularly memorable.

The first 3/4 of the story was very dull and seemed to pick up around the last 1/4. Great for a light read, but not particularly interesting.

Tempted to give it a 2.. Just a story about some very silly (not funny) people who flirted and deceived. One dimensional characters. Can't believe I finished it...

Meh

This was an enjoyable audiobook, but I had already watched the movie, so it didn't hold my interest since I already knew what would happen. It's a fun story through & listeners will enjoy it!

Read in an evening, using zero brain cells. Ready for the movie to drop now.

Started out kind of fun, but I definitely agree with other reviewers saying it felt like a ripoff of Pride and Prejudice without the charm. The characters were flat and annoying, and it felt kind of repetitive. I agree it also felt somewhat inaccurate.
