horrifying to say that the movie is leaps and bounds better than the book. like how did it take me three days to read a 250 page book? it really was just that bad. incredible amounts of telling, not showing. and just so so poorly written with such insufferable characters. at least selina is likable, because i wanted to throw a chair at mr. malcolm’s head.
2.5. i really wanted to like this one but it was so so shallow even for the genre
Mr. Malcom’s List by Suzanne Allain
Mr. Jeremy Malcom needs a wife. Therefore, as any man of business, he drafted a list of qualifications suitable of a wife. When he unintendedly spurns Julia Thistlewaite because of the said list, she invites her friend Selina Dalton to help her plot against Malcom and embarrass him in society. While Selena initially agrees to go along with the plan, she slowly starts realizing she might be falling for Malcom. What happens when he finds out about the scheme? Can there be any hope for them?
It was a cute story but there was a lot lacking in terms of character development. Malcom seemed almost robotic to me. I did not gather any chemistry between them along with any dialogue of substance. However, it was a light and fluffy read if you’re in the mood for it. It’s also made into a movie, which I’m hoping to check out!

bro this book was bad hahahhaha im sorry. i only read it because i watched the movie and the main characters were SO BLAND that it was borderline unbearable, but man they are WORSE in the book. i literally cannot explain to you how little i care about malcolm and selina lmao.
putting my hands up and someone who really had her theo james/zawe ashton blinkers on but man even julia and henry were aNNOYING in this book. so many bits in the movie that made me wince were like 50,000 times more condescending and gross in this book the men are terrible and not desirable at all and the women hate each other because....well you know how women are!!1! Not a fan. but hey the concept /is/ good enough to warrant an adaptation so if you are considering reading this – don't. just go watch the movie.

Julia has been what she considers humiliated by Mr. Malcolm, so she decides the best revenge is to make him fall in love with someone pretending to fulfill his cursed list of requirements and have that person jilt him once he's in love. To that end she invites her old school friend Selina to visit her but Selina doesn't really want to participate in her plot, she pretends to go along because she would like to meet some eligible gentlemen while she's in town. What follows is basically a comedy of errors and misunderstandings.
I didn't like Julia, she's a spoiled brat, but the rest of the characters were good, this was a fast paced easy read.

Not terrible but not good either. The pacing was not great, little to no character development, and the writing definitely reflects the author’s screenwriting background rather than fiction or romance writing. Totally bingeable, I finished this in a couple hours but I know I won’t remember it tomorrow.
Uneven. I really enjoyed the first half, but once the house party started the quality took a drastic dive. I do wonder if the movie is any better.
I came across this book on a Goodreads ad that said "Soon to be a major motion picture!" So I read the synopsis, thought this will be a light, quick read, and started it right away. This book was such a disappointment. I found the writing mediocre at best and the story incredibly boring. It reads like it's trying to be over the top antiquated with turns of phrases sprinkled throughout as if they were checked off as they were used. Random old words abounded. (When was the last time you read a book with the word 'cynosure' was used?) SAT words aside, the plot was just awful. The number of times Selena delicately calls him Mr Malcolm is obnoxious. Jeremy Malcolm was a very unlikable irredeemable character. While this is a Victorian novel, Selena had no agency for herself, easily controlled by Julia, and without any ability to communicate with Malcolm about Julia's schemes. In fact, all of their conversation leading up to the engagement could probably fit on a single sided sheet of paper, double-spaced. There was nothing emotional about their relationship, no chemistry whatsoever. The comedy of errors leading up to the engagement were slightly entertaining, with the last 10% far more entertaining that the rest of the book combined. The book was lacking some serious heat. This wasn't a slow burn, it's a no burn. I can't believe the books they will turn into a movie, when there are so many better ones out there.
