if Jafar and Jasmine got together and Jasmine was bi/pan 🫢

I never have to wonder about getting enough spice with Robert's stories. The hit or miss for me is all about if the story around the spice is interesting enough to make me care about the spice, and unfortunately in this case, it fell flat. This retelling of the Aladdin tale paints an enemies-to-lovers picture between Jasmine and Jafar that could have been interesting, but wasn't.

The issue may have been that too much happened too early; the story waxes on and on about Jasmine's strength and independent spirit despite being suppressed by her father, but we never really get a chance to bond with that before she's pushed into the submissive role that becomes the nature of the relationship with Jafar. And even though we know there is history between them and likely he's seen that side of her many times, we don't except for small glimmers that fizzle out unsatisfyingly. When they aren't engaged in copious amounts of descriptive sex, she's telling us about how much she's thinking about being engaged in copious amounts of descriptive sex.

Meh. Boring.

I enjoyed quite a few of the character arcs in the Gods series so was hopeful that the Villains series would be as fun, but it's not starting off on the best note.

"What’s the point of possessing a rare desert flower if no one knows it exists?"

probably the best Katee Robert book i’ve read so far, but i’ve only read like 2 1/2 at this point and they were all very average if not boring so idk if that really means anything

i thought the pacing was great for the length of the book and the story was very entertaining, but also i was like forcing myself to finish it

This was my first Katee Robert book and I’m glad it was this one!

This retelling of Jasmine and Jafar was a story I didn’t know I needed to satisfy the need for the villain to get the girl.

First off, the spice is real. From the jump! There’s no build up. You get thrown straight into it and it just continues.

The plot was different and had some twists but this is a good read if you’re looking for straight spice. A palette cleanser lol.

I love the copy I have because it has the author’s notes at the bottom of some pages where she provides insight and clarification throughout the book. (Not sure if all copies have that).
