Entertaining, very smutty…enjoyable but totally forgettable.
Not a bad book, just not for me.
I’ve read and liked Katee Roberts books in the past. I like retellings. I heard good things about these books, but I was wary and going to pass until I saw my library get the bindup of the first three books. I don’t have a big love for Aladdin; It just wasn’t a movie I watched a lot as a kid. I should have trusted my gut.
The content and characters didn’t really bother me, but I just kind of hate this retelling world? I can’t tell you explicitly why. If you rename these characters I would have no clue this was a retelling, which shouldn’t matter since I don’t care about the original, but something about this world’s construction became a burr in my side. I couldn’t connect with the characters because they all retained their names. If it wasn’t a retelling (but was the same story) I also don’t think I would love it, but I don’t think it would have bothered me as much.

I can’t believe I kept putting off reading this book…. It hit so many of my kinks in the perfect way. The consent non consent was done so well- a safe word woven in without breaking from their roles as bratty sub and daddy dom…
“Spread your thighs and let Daddy give you a kiss”
I am officially a slut for Jafar and the fact that outside of the bedroom they are total equals/ Jasmine has the upper hand. Oftentimes in CNC the Mmc can feel misogynistic and objectifying but here… Jafar respects Jasmine enough to give up control.

25 year old Jasmine is daughter of one of the most powerful men in the city. She has spent her lift knowing she's nothing more than a pawn, a tool to be used to get more power. She she learns that she's been sold into marriage to Ali, a business competitor of her father's, she decides that's enough and starts trying to figure out a way out.
But then Jafar, her father's second-in-command, shows up at her bedroom door to let her know that he's killed her father and is claiming her as his. She finds herself swept up into a new kind of life with the man she fears, hates and is irresistibly drawn to. But is that enough?
++++
A re-imagining of the characters from the House of Mouse in the erotic dark romance/mafia world that has been created by Katee Robert. For what it was I enjoyed it. I though the S&M spice was good and I liked that she showed the Dom constantly checking in for the sub's status AND showing aftercare.

It probably could've used another read through by a proofreader. Not my cup of tea
This book starts straight into the action. Like all THE ACTION. It's a bit intense for me to have that without any emotional connection for myself to the characters. (The characters are five years into their timeline and have the connection.) While we eventually get some of the world building and relationship backstory, it wasn't enough really for me.
I really loved the footnotes and insight from the writer in this edition.

Like, I didn't hate this, but it was kind of a hot mess. It couldn't decide what it wanted to be, so the plot was just all over the place. Jasmine was super annoying, Jafar was underdeveloped, and the rest of the characters were just silly. I don't know what it is about the way Katee Robert describes people, but I find it kind of off-putting? And what was that ending?!
Also, worst of all, if you are going to write erotica where the whole point is a dangerous, sexy villain as the "hero" maybe make the scandalous bits more, you know, scandalous instead of mediocre cliches.
