I opened this book's pages with high expectations carried from Bazterrica's first acclaimed publication, Tender is the Flesh, and her second bestseller did them justice.

I didn't experience the same goosebumps as I'd had with her former work, though it may have been mellowed by the fact that I'm currently more familiar with the topics she explores, and her tone. However, there were moments where I was aghast and enraptured at her ability to weave horror and political critique, her sharp, borderline omenic commentary on artificial intelligence, environmental disaster and climate change, cults and doomsday behavior, cruelty and torture, and so much more. This was a splendid, transfixing work of fiction that tells a story of how our world can collapse if we allow ourselves to succumb our humanity to technology, and the shattering consequences that could, without caution, ensue.

Sapphics in distress in a dystopian world with a cult of nuns is WILDDD.

The execution was decent, the ending made sense, but I wasn't gagged.

In a way, I did like that this critiqued a lot of political topics such as book burning and the rise of AI but I wish it would've done explored these themes further.

Overall, I feel meh.

A very interesting read indeed. Super short so don't expect a lot of context or resolution. Most of the book has graphic depictions of violence so avoid if that makes you queasy. I thought that the vague ecological disaster behind the downfall of humanity was a nice spin on things. I think I would've enjoyed it more if it was a fully fleshed out book. Glad there was a happy-ish ending.

This was a bit of a fever dream. The beginning was really solid and getting glimpses of the collapse of the world as the main character remembers her past was fascinating. Overall it was a bit too disjointed for me and I pretty much guessed what was happening to the Chosen and the Enlightened right away. The ending was ambiguous but not quite ambiguous enough for me.  I enjoyed it but do have a feeling of disappointment since I could tell what was happening right away.
