Cross Bones

Kathy Reichs

3.65 AVERAGE

I was really disappointed when I realized where the plot was going - Christ's bones? Come on, Reichs. But she did a very good job with the plot, giving the reader plenty of intrigue without ever getting into any mystical nonsense. I found the references to The Da Vinci Code highly amusing (there may have been some that I missed, but I haven't read the book, and I was only half-way paying attention when I saw the movie).

The thing that sets Kathy Reichs apart from other authors is the "witty repartee" between Temperance and Detective Ryan. You can practically see and hear them going at it.

Attention grabbing narrative!

A solid installment in the Temperance Brennan series.

“They’re all just trying to provide a formula for orderly, spiritual living, but somehow the message gets twisted, like cells in a body turning cancerous.”

This is the first book in the series that has not actively held my attention due to the aforementioned dislike. Therefore, I am rating Cross Bones Three out of Five Stars. I would not read it again as the main plot never held me in its grip like the previous books have; I was only finishing the book for more glimpses into the relationship between Tempe and Ryan, and I enjoy the forensic aspects.

As with every book in the Temperance Brennan series, I would recommend this to anyone whose interests are piqued by forensics, mystery, and crime. In particular, Cross Bones mostly takes place in Israel, and its key aspects include the history of Masada, Cave 2001, theories of the Holy Family, archaeology, and religion. Kathy Reichs has a wonderful way of writing, so that the facts and the information are so clear to understand that you feel as though you are learning as you read about the predicament Tempe has found herself in again. This was not my favourite read, but I look forward to the next installment when I feel the urge to dive back into crime.

plot: Tempe and Ryan catch a case of a killed Orthodox Jew, connecting them to a series of events relating to remains from B.C.E. time period. They have to travel to Israel all while having multiple groups attacking them. All to find their killer and to discover the truth about the bones and bones associated.
opinion: This book took a nice spin compared with the usual. It really made you question and dive into history. All while allowing Tempe sometime back to her roots with archaeology anthropology.

Amazing read. Page turner. Recommended.

I enjoyed this book, but the setting in Israel was not my favorite.

Well, definitely not my favorite installment - 2 1/2 stars, rounded to 3. Tempe was extra dense and shallow in this one and I found it reallllly grating. (Fat shaming, talked bad about people's teeth, and per usual - put herself knowingly in danger when there were better options.) She just seemed extra arrogant in this one and it bugged me.

The storyline was pretty dry and too up-down-up-down, all over the place. Religion versus science, too many characters to keep straight, etc.

I'm really hoping Break No Bones sucks me back in. I don't want to lose interest in these characters. Sigh...
