This was an interesting book about an historic event that I had not ever heard if before. And it was interesting to read it with the memories of the events of January 6, 2021, still fresh. But honestly, the jumping around of the timeline was just very distracting for me.

Eye-opening and descriptive of Lincoln's character and honor before taking office. Meltzer blends interesting facts, timelines and character motivation to paint a picture of the powder-keg nation prior to the Civil War.

The good - great research and a lot of unknown or little known history. I loved learning more about Lincoln as an adult with a successful law practice prior to his presidency. I also didn't know he had a close relationship with his stepmother.
The bad - it felt like a grade school book in that every single time a character was mentioned, they repeated who they were and how they were involved. There were a few subsequent chapters talking about the same person, and each time, her role and connection were repeated. In subsequent chapters! I mean, my memory isn't great, but it can hold up from one chapter to the next.
Overall, I'll give it 3.5 stars.

Very well written. Chapters are short and the book moves along. It was interesting reading it in today’s climate with the capitol riots not far behind us. I found it strange in a way how little people have changed from then to now

Solid research, fluent development, thus climax is reached very naturally after all the built-ups.
