This was one of my first John Grisham books and also my first legal thriller. This book made me want to read more in the genre. It had a good mixture of humor, heart felt moments, good lawyer moments, bad lawyer moments, and some action. I found the legal proceedings interesting and intense, without being too dry and jargon heavy. This book is seemingly more on the light hearted side, but had some sincere moments that made the characters likable or at least inspired some sympathy. I really enjoyed it!
This book started out a little more like something I would expect from Carl Hiaasen with its caricatures of Oscar Finley and Wally Figg. However, as it progress it had a clear hero which Mr. Hiaasen's works never do. David Zinc, a 5 year "rookie" of a lawyer saves the day in the end.
Whopping three Anti-Asian Racism Hall of Shame moments. So unnecessarily hurtful. Could’ve easily been a 5 star for the top shelf narrator
I have to admit, I got emotional at certain points in this book. No one describes the thrilling, heart-pounding highs and terrible, deep, dark lows of lawyering quite as well. Not a spoiler, but when Zinc was doing his first on the record cross, I was back in a small courtroom in rural Texas doing my own again. Not the same scale by any means, but man-alive exactly.the.same feeling.

Loved Oscar and Wally. David is the hero and the kind of lawyer who cares about his clients.
Meh. Overall pretty funny, but not the full characters I enjoyed in other Grisham books. Two Grisham misses in a row for me!
This was a fun, fast read. More like the Grisham of [b:The Rainmaker|5349|The Rainmaker|John Grisham|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1320486015s/5349.jpg|3154548]- still not back to the glory and depth of [b:A Time to Kill|32542|A Time to Kill|John Grisham|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1320488160s/32542.jpg|1804929]but much better than [b:The Confession|7933437|The Confession|John Grisham|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1320541779s/7933437.jpg|11286470]. Great escapist fiction.
John Grisham is a good writer so the book was well written. About halfway through I was wondering what the plot was and if something was going to happen. Didn't seem to have a major plot or event that takes place which I was expecting. I think the last part of the book was the best, but still nothing too major. It was ok.
