I probably would not have finished this book if not for my admiration for the David character. It was a bit slow at time, but I loved the way it ended.
When it comes to legal novels in plain English, Grisham is the King.
David Zinc works for a prestigious law firm, makes a very comfortable salary, drives a nice car and wears tailored suits; but it all comes with a cost. The hours are long and grueling and his boss micromanages.
Then one day, David snaps and instead of going to work, he goes to a bar where he proceeds to get drunk. Seeing an advertisement on a bus for a law firm, he decides he is going to quit his job and apply at the firm of Finley & Figg, who call themselves a boutique law firm. In reality, they are two-bit ambulance chasers that specialize in divorces and DUI cases.
Then a miracle arrives at their door by the name of Krayoxx. Finley & Figg are about to enter the arena of mass tort law, with David in tow. Despite the fact none of them have argued a case in Federal Court, they are confident of a big win from the Krayoxx makers.
As the trio dreams of what they will do with their part of the settlement, everything begins to unravel.

More like 2 and a half stars. Enjoyable, but definitely not one of Grisham's best. Right from the start, this story had plausibility and likeability problems.
We would be happy to root for David, if we knew a little more about him, but his decision making in staying at Finley and Fogg just didn't make sense.
The outcome of the trial seemed preordained and the interesting elements of the story were wrapped up very quickly. I also found myself skipping large chunks if detailed testimony from the trial as it didn't add anything. Grisham talks about the jurors and even the lawyers sleeping through that part...so did this reader.
One other thing that stood out to me, which I don't remember noticing before in Grisham's books, was the sexism. Did we really need to hear about how "striking" the defendant's lawyer was every time she got up to speak? Or how shapely her bottom looked in her suit?
I am about to go on a Grisham binge, with two more books waiting for me, so I will see if this vein continues.

This was pretty good. Not his best but an enjoyable listen nonetheless.
Many years since I read John Grisham but loved the gentle unfolding of the tale and the sumptuous telling of the story
i enjoyed this, but I listed to it on a playaway and had difficulty paying attention! I may have liked it more if I READ it!

I was looking for courtroom drama. This one is litigation at the office level. Should have known! It's not bad reading for the airport. The beginning was interesting with a young lawyer who walks out of his job. I didn't get a real feel of for the characters and the last third of the book didn't live up to the start.
Pretty good character driven story hidden among a lot of lawyer stuff that wasn’t as interesting as some other stories by John Grisham. I loved David, Wally, and Oscar and even though they make a lot of very questionable choices, it makes for an engaging read.
