DID NOT FINISH: 20%

DNF 20%. Descriptions too long and detailed. Story uneventful. Little to no action, tension or stakes.

Both unique and lively, I enjoyed this book. Maybe you will as well?

Three chapters in, I went out and bought the next two books in the series. I knew I wanted to binge read them. There is a lot of world building in the first half, but it was so vivid and well written I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the switching between the two time lines. And of course, the book is so visually beautiful I loved just looking at it.

While reading, it was a little slow paced and I kept getting distracted. But it did grab my attention about 75% in and I’m looking forward to adding the sequels to my reading list

DNF.

I liked the writing. The culture seemed kind of interesting, so did the MC, but... I just wasn't invested enough in any of it, and I was getting tired of the weird bezoar harvesting schtick.

i almost never soft-dnf books but i've soft-dnf'd this book a handful of times. it's time to admit that rin chupeco's writing is not for me. this is my second time giving their books a try and i found myself nodding off more than i'd like to say, even with the audiobook running. i hoped the bone witch wouldn't be as overwritten as their 2019 novel (never tilting world) but here i am fighting the urge to fall asleep even more. there are a lot of noticeable improvements to their writing from this compared to never tilting world, but it's not enough to justify putting myself through another slog of a reading experience. i was gifted the girl from the well so hopefully the horror genre will lend better to the slow worldbuilding and storytelling that chupeco likes to employ. i usually have more patience for it because of atmospheric tension and buildup. otherwise, that's it for me.
