I had a road trip and this was free.
As I started listening to it, I was reminded of different other books that seem to be pieces in this book.
A mixture of cultures, people, kingdoms, magic, witches, etc.
I kept thinking how much this resembles Memoirs of a Geisha with a little GoT throw in.
Don't really know I have an actual opinion on the book. Meh, it got me to point A to point B and it was free.

DID NOT FINISH: 20%

I think this has a cool concept, but there’s a lot of world-building mixed into the main storyline, and I just don’t care enough to get invested in it.

It took me a bit to really get into the story, but eventually I got the rhythm. I think overall the story was interesting, Tea and the other Asha were strong enough characters to keep me entertained. I like the idea behind a bone witch and the Asha as well. I'll likely pick up the next two books in the series because I am invested in them enough to care.

It’s more between 3.75 and 4 stars because I liked the story. I really liked the different POV between Tea and the boy, I liked that the boy is the future and Tea’s POV was the past. In some parts the story was a little slow and felt flat, but there are parts that I liked very much. Loved the ending and liked the build up soo definitely will continue the series.
slow-paced

It may have a magic system, but it still somehow manages to rip off Memoirs of a Geisha.

I so, so, so wanted to like this book. I love the premise and the room for all the world-building surround the daeva, heartsglass, and asha. However, the world-building fell flat for me. I walked away from this book not really understanding the nuances of how to read a heartsglass, the different kind of daeva
Spoilerat least the seven that Tea raises, if there are even only seven?
, and just some of the conversations themselves. I re-read this scene twice, but I still don’t understand
Spoilerthe second, or even the first, secret that Zoya refers to when they apprehend Aenah
.

In a similar vein, nothing really happens in this book? 20% is modern-day Tea and her vague portents the Bad things that will, presumably, happen next book; the other 80% is fairly nothing events from 14-15 years-old Tea and her training as an asha. I appreciate a hero’s journey book as much as the next person, but this book is about 95% promise of a good book to come (
Spoilerespecially with the drop at the end that Kalen is Tea’s beloved, considering there was no build to that in this book and presumably we haven’t read about it yet
) and only 5% actually a good book. I think there was too much pushed off to future books and this book needed to spend more time actually delivering on the promises that the premise put forth.

I’ll keep the next books in my list of things to read for when the mood strikes, but they’re not high on my list of priorities. The only thing that would salvage this for me Book 2 being effectively titled, “The Book That Finally Explains All the Magic” or “In This House We Only Ship Kalen + Tea, Oh and They’re Adults Now, Get Ready for Spice.”
