This book was just profoundly... “eh.” Despite the story completely revolving around magic, it lacked a truly magical, whimsical spark that would have made it more interesting. The pacing is also atrocious, in that it drags on rather than flows, and some of the character descriptions feel unnecessary if not overly drawn out. The romantic aspects of the book are straight out of any other YA fantasy novel and I’m waiting for the book that finally introduces a love interest that isn’t “the handsomest boy I’ve ever seen” and generically nice, but actually interesting, complex, and maybe normal-looking. I had high hopes for this book (kudos to the cover artist) and loved the author’s focus on aspects of Persian mythology and culture, as well as the subtle nods to the surrounding Eurasian cultures, but the plot, character development, pacing, and dialogue use just fell flat for me. Overall, pretty disappointed and I probably won’t remember reading this in a few days.

Once the popular clique used their wealth to humiliate the powerful-but-humble protagonist, I was done. The book started out so strong and interesting and dynamic, and then began to take on more and more common YA fantasy tropes. I draw a line at the clique, and the 15 minutes (I listened to the audiobook) after that were too boring to compensate.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would! It took me a little bit to get into but many interesting concepts were introduced and I love me a good story with necromancy. Chupeco's imagery and descriptions are lush and resulted in some great world building. I love how there was mystery when it came to the magic and we seemingly learnt about it as Tea did. Love the fact Bone witches need to kill undead monsters. The idea of the heartglass is cool though not super practical if you're trying to hide something haha. I do have to say that my attention started to wane as the book went on, I think all the lessons slowed down the pace quite a bit but I'm eager to dive into book 2!
