First, I called it. I knew who the buried loved one was gonna be before it was revealed at the end of the book. Just gotta get that off of my chest.

While I appreciate the messing with narration by having Tea tell her own story to this unnamed Bard-guy, and having the suspense be how she ended up exiled, it really broke the narrative flow of the story too much. It didn't helped that with only a smattering of action the plot progression felt way slower as well. This felt a lot like one huge prologue. In some books I've read in the past, that's a great thing, it really gets me jazzed to immediately pick up book 2, but this one, not so much. It wasn't until the last 1/4 of book that I felt like I needed to know what happened next, and that was partially because my kindle was telling me I was 75% of the way through it.

So it wasn't really for me, but I can still see this being really enjoyable. The magic systems was cool and I could see myself really enjoying the slowburn romance if I do end up wanting to read the whole series. I just don't know if I will yet or not.

I don’t think I’ve ever understood why people dislike the omniscient older version of themselves narrator until now. If they pulled the older Tea bits out, this book would bump up easily to 4.5 ⭐️. That being said, I mainly had a good time with it. It got painfully slow at about 70% but recovered well. The characters and the world were interesting enough, we didn’t need the weird future tease. We just didn’t. I will read the next book, but I very much hope it’s solidly in one time period.
