The story held me entranced from the start. I like the way Chupeco balances the point of view, and am excited to get my hands on the next volume.

The world-building I found at first confusing but as the book went on, more things came to light which helped push the story along. Not a lot happens in this book but I wasn't disinterested: there were still secrets to uncover and characters to learn about. There was only hinting at romance but I found that it fit well into the plot and encouraged me to want to read on. The magic system was unique and the history behind it was fascinating. I was slow reading this but not because it wasn't interesting. I enjoyed the shifting from the past to the present, and plotting out in my mind how the former came to be the latter.

Did not finish. In my opinion it was boring and repetitive. Very slow. Couldn't make it past ch 11. Read this in my book club and everyone agreed and only 1 person of 14 finished it. Description sounded good but fell short. Couldn't keep my attention. The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 is hey, she wrote a book. That's impressive. Was it good though, not in my opinion.
