Bit of a different read for me but I really enjoyed it! Interesting magic system and an unusual world! It took a while for me to get into it and understand what was going on π but I ended up flying through the second half of the book! Looking forward to continuing the story! π«Άπ»
Got bored and the writing deteriorated significantly.
I really wanted to like it because it was so beautifully written but the pacing was so slow that I didn't really care about anyone. I don't think I'll read the next book even know I was a little bit intrigued by the ending.

I have some mixed thoughts on this book. I love the worldbuilding, the 8 kingdoms feel real and fleshed out, the city the mc lives in feels alive. the world feels lived in.
I love the magic system, i love the mixture of cultural inspirations in the world. It was so original and refreshing.
I loved the intense amount of detail about the mc's clothes and food, everything felt so real.
I loved how many women were in this book, i love how they were both graceful and beautiful AND powerful and strong. That all aspects were treasured and prioritised by the characters.
Now, the things i didn't like. The first 5 or so chapters were so hard to get through, it was dual timeline, dual perspectives AND a shit load of exposition and new words with no explanation, it was frustrating and confusing.
Until about 1/4 of the way in, I had to reread sections until i understood what was being talked about or even who's perspective i was reading from.
I also don't like that the mc is only 17 in the present day timeline. I know this book is YA but she really doesn't read as a teenager in those sections and it feels off somehow. A minor pet peeve i suppose but worth mentioning.
Still though, really enjoyed this book and will be continuing with the series!
