Verity Price is studying non-human “monsters” in New York City when she discovers there might be a dragon under the city and the monster-killing Covenant has sent a representative to purge the city’s monsters. And he’s pretty darn cute.

I am totally in awe of Seanan McGuire's imagination - she can turn her hand to Shakespeare-quoting faeries with death harbinger roomies, post-apocalyptic political thrillers WITH ZOMBIES and now, with her latest heroine, a book about a Cryptozoologist who really just wants to dance. There's never a sense of "this reminds me of *insert relevant UF series here*" when reading McGuire's work, her worlds are so defiantly unique.

Discount Armageddon was insanely fun and had me grinning as I journeyed through New York's supernatural underbelly with spunky heroine Verity. I'm not sure it will take a place in the re-read pile (half the fun was the "I wonder what will happen next" momentum) but I eagerly await book 2 in the series. And the new Toby!

I can tell this book just isn't for me. Or maybe I'm just not in the mood for something light-hearted and relentlessly perky as this.

I liked this book. It made me want to read more. McGuire had created such a interesting world it seemed hard to fit it in one book. Like her other series she goes light on the romance and heavy on the fantasy. overall a good read.

i kept waiting for the narrative voice of this book to start grating on me but somehow it just...didn't?

i had my urban fantasy phase and eventually i got tired of the sarcastic quippy protaganist voice that seems endemic to the genre

verity totally fits into the Standard Urban Fantasy Heroine archetype! but maybe the long break helped because i was fine with her, not in love with her character or anything but definitely willing to keep reading

i was, however, actively fond of the worldbuilding. i liked that mcguire went for a more varied (and original? i didn't recognize some of the creatures but it's been a hella long time since my myth phase so who knows) set of supernatural creatures than i've seen in most urban fantasy

not a werewolf or vampire to be found

anyways i plan to continue this literary experiment in reading a series for the mythos and plot with no strong investment in character; i imagine it'll be a emotionally restful experience

3 stars

Definitely not high literature, and I didn't enjoy this one as much as the October Daye books by this same author, but it was intentionally cheesy fun. The main female character doesn't frustrate me like many female protagonists in urban fantasy. She's self-deprecating, but competent/knowingly brash in a time crunch. I'd definitely kick these back for brain candy reading when I'm in the mood.

Okay, so, coming at this as as reread, I... oh boy. Originally, I was incredibly neutral on Verity and Dominic. I wasn't super invested in either of them but I didn't really dislike them.

This read, I'm trending more toward dislike. Still haven't quite hit it, but... I think my problem is that Verity reads like a baby-of-the-family while Antimony reads as eldest-girl to me? So I am, of course, extremely attached to Antimony and extremely meh on Verity.

Also, this read through, I'm more attuned to how incredibly messed up the Price family is. So fucking messed up. Also like, since when do they get to decide what the appropriate level of environmental impact from cryptids is? Who put them in charge? Who is watching the watchmen?

I dunno, I'm just not very into this series. Antimony, Sam, and James are my jam. Verity and Dominic? Not so much.
