This book was interesting, to say the least. Going into this, I was a bit confused by the beginning of the story, and this eventually became clear to me because this was a sequel to "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer." This book properly delves into Southern standards and slavery in the latter 1800s while following along with Huckleberry Finn and Jim, the two main characters. These two characters had adventures that I'd never think could even happen or make sense, like, how did they meet two guys who just falsified that they were a Duke and a King? The book does start dull, has some complicated diction, and have some odd turning points which make it a tad hard to follow along, but the book picks up as you go further alongside Finn's adventures on his raft down the Mississippi River. Overall, this book is a tad funny, especially with Jim (the slave alongside Finn), and is a good fictional read that would leave you constantly questioning what's going to happen when you flip to the next page.

Friends of mine, as well as the WSJ, recommended reading James--the story of Huckleberry Finn's Jim from his perspective.  Prior to reading James I thought it best to re-read Huckleberry Finn.  Huckleberry Finn is often described as the Great American Novel and I simply didn't get it.  It's a good story, reflective of Antebellum America, for better and for worst, and then the relationship between white boy and an adult African American slave.  The characters are pretty one dimensional, I saw little character development, and the plot is interesting, if somewhat farcical.  Of course, there is no questioning of the asymmetric relationship between the boy and the adult.  It is certainly a literary snapshot of America at a point in time but when I think of the Great American Novel, hopefully this is not it.

Enjoyed this SO MUCH MORE than Tom Sawyer! It did get boring and drag on at times but some parts were actual page-turners.
The language and period-typical horrible attitudes were a lot to get used to but it was an educational read in that sense too.
