DID NOT FINISH

Couldn't finish. Writing was awful, and story had no character

this book started off okay but really went downhill for me. the writing wasn’t great but i was still invested in the story throughout part 1. the quick chapters w all the timestamps, the many characters, and the frequent twists kept me engaged. even w the cringy writing, the premise of the kidnapping was still scary. part 2 started to get kind of boring, especially the backstory about the creators of the chain, i literally did not care at all about their childhood. even the final showdown wasn’t that interesting, the outcome was obvious. the ending was also just bad, it’s unclear how all these issues the characters were facing got resolved (or if they even did?). probably about 2.5 stars
fast-paced

I need to preface this by saying that I don't like mysteries. I always want to jump to the end to see what happened. Can't take the suspense. I didn't jump on this one, though. I had this book in my queue and subsequently decided that is seemed a bit too dark so I removed it. However, when Don Winslow recommended it I thought I'd put it back on my list. Initial reaction: Damn, the author has one twisted mind. The fear, stress, and abject terror these families who are pulled into the Chain face is perfectly depicted, as is the aftermath. I did find the second half of the book somewhat predictable and just a tad unbelievable, but overall this was quite the page turner.

это скверно написанная книга с персонажами-роботами, но сюжет при этом настолько стремительный, что времени замечать недостатки особо нет. не пойму только почему они по ней кино решили делать. сериал бы был куда больше в тему.

Well. I read this in one sitting. This book is terrifying - and not because there's a crazed killer running around. Imagine having the worst happen. Then imagine that you have to do the worst to someone else. Or else. I will be thinking about The Chain for a very long time.

Wow. This book was incredible.
First of all, I absolutely loved the concept. So original (for anything I’ve read) and psychologically scarring. The lengths that someone will go to in order to protect their kids is extraordinary and I don’t doubt that in the real world it would be any different. Nobody believes they could kidnap a kid in order to save their own but quickly surprise themselves and fall into the criminal mindset.
Secondly, I haven’t hated the ‘villain’ in a book like that in a long time. I could literally feel the hate running through me whilst I read their chapters and the things they did.
Lastly, the book was written in such a brilliant way. A mixture of metaphors, facts and daunting descriptions, I felt the way the characters were feeling.
Brilliant storyline, characters and writing style. 5/5 from me.

4.5 ⭐️

Twisty Thriller, Fast paced, short chapters. I am def interested in reading more by this author. I do agree part two was a bit rushed and hard to follow at times but I enjoyed it overall.
