not my kind of suspense.

So cringey, so lame. Why the hype?

Amazing premise, full of action, quick moving plot. The dialogue was often so cheesy it made me cringe. I think it would make a great Hollywood action film, but it wasn't my favorite read.
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

I just don’t understand how the first half of this book was so good and the second half was so mediocre. It’s like they were written by totally different people.

3.3 rounded down to 3 stars. While the concept was strong and intriguing, the overall writing style left me feeling meh.

Execution fell short, and I struggled to connect with the writing, particularly the portrayal of a female (mother’s) perspective. It felt obvious the author was writing from a male gaze and it did not feel genuine. Part 1 was thrilling and engrossing, but Part 2 didn't live up to the build-up. The book read more like a script, especially towards the end. Honestly would be a be a better tv show than book (a rare review).

3.5
Propulsive but unbelievable.

As I was reading this book, I couldn't decide if I kind of hated it or if I was really into it. I think both ended up being kind of true. But when I finished, I also realized that it was exactly like an adult version of the Christopher Pike books I loved as a kid. There were villains with an overly complicated plan and no coherent motivation. There were twins and someone with a strange illness or allergy. The main characters were isolated in their lives with no connections to anyone outside of the 4 or 5 people in the story. Someone was ridiculously handsome and a regular normal person suddenly developed superhero-level knowledge of guns and explosives and tactical maneuvers. There was a weird romance at a weirdly inappropriate time. It had all of the elements from all of the Christopher Pike books - just with less body shaming and objectification of teenage girls.

Anywhooo - the basic plot is that a single mom gets a phone call that her daughter has been kidnapped and she has to pay a ransom, plus she has to continue THE CHAIN by kidnapping another kid and forcing that kid's parents to pay a ransom and kidnap another kid, and so the chain continues. Once you have added a new person to the chain, your kid gets released. It is an interesting idea and there are some high tension moments, but as the book went on, I just felt like it got more and more silly.

Great ending!!!!! Very pleased with the plot twist. 5 stars ❤️

Remember those annoying chain letters when you were younger? Forward this letter or something awful will happen.
Well, what if the “chain” was kidnapping, ransom, or worse?
When Rachel’s daughter is kidnapped, she’s not only tasked with paying $50,000, but with kidnapping another child herself. And so on, and so on, and so on. Any police involvement and The Chain will know!
What would YOU do?
